This 4th of July, Classic Friars Club Roasts asks what could be more American than a good old pie in the face – apple pie of course! Independence Day is one big party full of parades, fireworks, music and happy people. It’s a long weekend, too, so there is even more to celebrate! Between all the noise-making and horn-tooting, spend time with family and friends celebrating one great part of our country’s national psyche – the ability to laugh at ourselves and each other. Nowhere is this principle of parody as highly refined as the celebrity roast.
There are many serious celebrations on the 4th of July, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun watching the best comedy roasts of all time. Comedy legends participating in a Friars Club Roast would often save their best zingers for the guest of honor and each other. The goings-on at these events were rumored to be so raucous and bawdy that women were not allowed to attend until 1989. Wanting to know what went on at these wild festivities, though, in 1983 comedienne Phyllis Diller disguised herself as Claude Rains and snuck into a Sid Caesar roast. But you don’t have to go to such drastic measures to find out for yourself what went on at a roast. Simply order the Jerry Lewis roast or Johnny Carson videos and get ready for some side-splitting humor.
Since humor is part of what makes our country so great, here are a few 4th of July jokes to get the laughter started:
- What did one flag say to the other flag? Nothing. It just waved!
- Do you know where the Declaration of Independence was signed? At the bottom, of course!
- No, the last words of the “Star Spangled Banner” are not “play ball!”
- Did you hear the joke about the Liberty Bell? Yeah, it cracked me up.
